Building a natural habitat for your hamster

Keeping your hamster healthy and happy involves creating an environment that allows them to do the things they would do in a natural habitat.  However it doesn’t need to look particularly natural as the way your hamster sees their surroundings is not the same as how you see it.  You can use all kinds of artificial materials, and in some cases these are better than their natural counterparts.

To start with you need the biggest cage possible.  Small hamster cages are adequate, provided your hamster is let out for runs, but a big cage provides a better environment.  You might consider getting a big fish tank, minimum 2ft wide.

The more there is to do in his cage the more natural behaviour a hamster can display.  You can make it look natural for your own aesthetic pleasure but your hamster is unlikely to be bothered whether his toys and hideyholes are made from wood or plastic.  What is important is that he can run, hide, burrow and climb.
