Some consequences of improper breeding

Little pups are cute and babies are fun to watch as they grow up. But before you consider getting a mate for your pet so as to have cute little babies, please consider the consequences if breeding is not done properly. Your pet will be the one who will suffer for life.

The following are just 2 of the several breeding pairs to avoid. There are more.

1. Satin Syrians

Mating of 2 Satin Syrians will cause supersatinization. The pups become Supersatins. This means that the babies will have very sparse fur. Even with good skin/coat supplements, the fur of such hamsters will not be as grossly or thick as properly bred ones. The skin tends to be flaky and dry.

2. Supersatins Syrians

When 2 Supersatins breed, almost hairless hamsters will be produced. This is due to a genetic mutation that affects the epidermis, i.e. the outer most layer of the skin where the hair follicles are. The mutation causes little or no fur growth. The skin is very warm and porous to the touch.

Hairless hamsters are prone to illness as their immunity systems are impaired. They also have a shorter lifespan. Special consideration need to be made for their housing and food.

Not very good looking hammies here, don't you think so? Hence, please consider very carefully if you want to look for a mate for your pet. :P

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dwarfs are very common and many people get to purchase/adopt them in pairs. Inadvertently, this could result in some breeding of these hammies at home.

1. Never breed a female winter white to a male campbell as this can lead to delivery problems for the female. This is because campbells are larger in size and the female hamster may have problems in delivering large pups from such a mating. Both female and pups can die.

2. It is important to identify the colors of the breeding pairs as some colours of the hamsters could produce offsprings with undesirable traits.

3. It is not wise to breed amongst siblings or within the family.

Compromised traits in the pups can be obtained if the hamsters are not properly bred. Some of the more common ones are set out below.

1. Having ratty looks. Instead of having a cute round hamster face, you get pups with sharp pointed features resembling rats.

2. Getting pups with bad temperaments such as small time nippers or big time biters. Some are difficult to tame too.

3. Many offsprings are prone to getting warts, lumps, tumors at a young age.

4. Breeding hamsters with incompatible genes can result in lethal genes in the pups. This means that deformed pups, such as limbless or eyeless ones are be produced.

5. Poor coat condition can also be resulted.

This hammy has a nice fur coat when she was young. However, like her brother, as she aged, she suffered severe fur loss.

Parasites or fungal growth were ruled out by the vets.

Again, not a pretty sight. It is the hamster who suffered ultimately.

Please spare a thought and refrain from breeding indiscriminately.
